Here is the Progress of the Great Hanger Project.
Since moving to Warner Springs from Fremont California in 1989 we have tried to build a hanger. Finally we are starting the work! Our Hanger is an R&M Steel Hanger and it is approx 85X100 feet. Opening to the East is the full width and west is 60 feet.
The Hanger arrived on July 25th and the next day our Concrete Contractor, Larry Krause started getting the ground ready.

By
the way we did get our above ground tank approved!
The
Hanger Arrives on a truck 7-25-02
We used a North County Crane to lift it off
Digging for the foundation 7-28

Getting close to county inspection. This is West side.
There
is a BIG Fire in Julian. Garret shot this on 7-30. It is the sun through the
smoke late afternoon.
8-7-02
Cement is finally here for foundation!
14 Cement truck loads later! Looks like we are building a Sky Scraper.
Helo stealing water from Goose Lake for the FIre.
There have been reports that we have been evacuated, they are untrue, you can
see the firs is far enough away!
8-14 SLAB DAY!!!
Starting at 0545 the slab was poured. We now have a skating rink, smooth and looking great! We are taking our crew to the Colorado River for some fun before building the Hanger.
Strange looking Machine. It pumped the 112 yards of concrete into the 85X100
hanger floor. A very amazing machine.
El Crew. These guys worked very hard and what team work. I was worn out
watching.
Of course Chandelle wanted to run across and leave her permanent mark,, however
she settled for one paw.
Week of 8-19 to 8-25 A Big Busy Week
Putting up the first Columns. It is a lot taller then we thought!!
You know who is holding the thing together?
Our crew at times has been 10.
Everything moved in the wind! It was very scary lifting the main header which
moved like a snake. You would not think that that much steel would wiggle so
much! It was very scary, but we got it bolted, but then the whole thing sways in
the wind.
It became stable when we got all the cable bracing and corner bracing in. We
have the first section plumbed. Only 3 more to go!
Week of 8-26 to 9-1 The Main Structure goes up!
Birds eye view of all the 5 sections. Boyd rode the Fork lift to the top!
The Crew, Karen taking the picture!
A nice day to be soaring, but we are getting some paint on things!
Karen wanted White Paint, so she painted it. I will get a picture of her doing
it next week. It is worth the wait.
It gives you an idea of the size!
Finally Sunday after 5, we painted one part of one section completed. This shows
all the final bracing, just waiting for walls on this part (maybe this week).
Karen and I have been putting in 10 to 12 hours 7 days a week on this.
Wednesday 9-4, some wall goes up, finally!
watering the dirt for dust, any other comments might have repercussions!
As promised Karen painting. We ran out of the original 40 gals, then today out f
the additional 25 gals. Chuck Kett is picking up another 10 gals.
This is the invisible man, Shane painting.
Look a wall going up. They shipped us the wrong parts so we spent a few hours
head scratching and trying to figure our what to do. Unless you have done this
type of construction it is hard to imagine how hard it is, everyday.
It is son nice and white, and a wall starting. It is no longer a big bird cage.
he walls are a little over 20 feet in height, it is steel siding and heavy.
Friday 9-6 The Walls are up, next week the roof!!
It sure makes things look small. It is a great echo chamber. The amazing thing
is how small the walls make a sea cargo container look.
Saturday 9-14 Finally the Roof is On. A big job!
Guess who turned 21, our first born! Garret
The roof crew with Karen the foreman, er foreperson? Jim Moore hanging off the
forks of the big lift.
Our next job is the gables and the door hanging. Like everything else it looks like a big job!
10-10 It has been a while, we have been working too Hard. Big doors on the East side are up, we are working on the West side. We are beat, but not broken.
Chandelle working on the scissors lift. Yes she wanted to be with Bret. Once she
was up she may have thought better of it, however the next time I went up, she
wanted to go also.
There are 240 holes which have to be drilled into the concrete to hold the
tracks for the doors. It is a shaky, slow, noisy job. They are2.25 inches deep
and 3/8 inch round.
Jim Moore doing the finish touches on the trim.
The East door going up. It took 8 to 10 people to carry these, but a forklift to
put up!
Looks GREAT with the skins on and trim, they even roll!
A little darker inside, and a lot less wind!!
Shane and his 4th of July imitation. Spares were defiantly flying.
As it gets closer we have to back off a little because of the Miramar Airshow next week. The engineer is coming from Utah for the final sign-off the 25th.
Just a few of the finished pictures:
The West end with closed doors!
Magic inside getting ready for Miramar Airshow. We were able to fly every day,
however at 0930 the weather only let us fly a full show on Saturday. On the
Night show we fired 68 out of 70 prosthetics!!
We did have a little get together to send off Jim Sweet one of the 1-26ers who
is moving away. Also, Ted Delaney is going to war on the Carrier, USS Constellation.
