Torrey Pines

Sky Sailing Sailplane Rides 2004

The Last weekend for Torrey Pines for 2004 is March 6 & 7th

Sky Sailing has been invited by the  Associated Glider Clubs of Southern California (AGCSC) to do rides at the Torrey Pines Gliderport. Sailplanes, also known as Gliders, have been flying off the Torrey Pines Cliffs since the 1920s. Each spring since 1934 the AGCSC has secured permits to use this historic airport. For about 2 months the parking lot is returned to become 2 active airport runways. The sailplanes are towed aloft by use of a Winch which pulls a cable connected to the glider. On strong wind days a car is used to tow the aircraft aloft. If it were not for  the historic value of the airport and it being used as an active airport each year, this extremely valuable land would have been developed!

Sky Sailing will have its Ride operation active on Weekends to the end of April from around 9am to almost 5pm. We will have 2 rides available: The Seagull which last from 3 to 5 minutes is done when there is little or no wind. When the wind increases above 15 mph (white capes on the ocean) we will do the Eagle ride which last about 15 to 20 minutes. You will have the opportunity to Soar above the fantastic cliffs around La Jolla and see this magnificent area as only seen by a very few.

The Sailplane is a Schweizer 2-33 which is made in the USA. It is a two seat training aircraft with a glide ratio of 20:1. You will get to sit in the front while your FAA Certified commercial pilot sits in back. If time permits your pilot will allow you to fly the aircraft!

Your pilot will take pictures on each flight (2 or3 on the Seagull and most of a roll on the Eagle). You may purchase the exposed roll of film after the Eagle flight. But on the Seagull we cannot break a roll of film. All the prints from the Seagull flights will be available for free (pictures of you) at Warner Springs, we will not be able to send them to you, they must be picked up.

Reservations are not available and rides are first come first served due to remote location. This operation is very labor intensive. Credit Cards are run through Sky Sailing Warner Springs and picture ID is required. Checks and cash are also accepted! A signed release is also required.

SEAGULL: $60       EAGLE: $99
